I'm one of those guys that tends to be behind the wheel of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! every 8-10 months, and I've had my Civic for 9 months... Sooooo I've got the itch for a new car, and an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! just opened up that I really like.
A 71 Super Beetle 1600. None of these pics not of car but same color, and the first one has the right wheels, and hubcaps. I was to excited when I saw it to remember to take pics.
OH I would need these yellow fogs.
A friend of a friend has a partially restored 71 Super Beetle, one of those "looks great at ten feet away going ten miles an hour" !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , that she has "gotten to old to drive". she wants to sell it and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! "one of those boxy Toyotas" aka an Xb.
If I sold my Civic and paid it off I would have enough left over to buy it from her since I'm pretty sure she wants about 2800 for it.
A classic Beetle is just one of those Iconic !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that it seems every gear head should own at some point. I have a feeling that before I go to sleep tonight I'll be posting a CL and for my car...
EDIT: I think I've got the year wrong. I just watched a video with a 71 Super Beetle and the interior was very different. The one I sat in today must be newer.
EDIT EDIT: It was a 73.
Here's one more pic just for fun

DO IT. But check for rust before you do so.

The only just I could see was on the chassis next to the running boards, none in the engine bay or in the Frunk. I know she said she replaced the running boards at some point in the last five years. She's owned the car since the mid 80's and it was restored in I think she said 05 with mostly new German made parts. For the most part the looked like a bard new car.

That's good that it was restored. Definitely check the floor pans and also below the rear windows towards the back next to the air vent thing (if that makes any sense). Also check the wheel wells and around suspension mounts for rust. Rust can pop up in weird spots on those cars.

Ewe..super beetles :/ 69' is the newest Beetle I'd ever spend money on, unless it were a baja, I'd spend money on a 70's baja.

Why is that? I mean the only down side of the Super Beetle that I've ever heard of is that it's harder to slam because of the wider front track. and Mcpearson strut front suspension. And the interior doesn't look as special.

Not nearly as collectible, purists just plain don't like them, also, the 70's is when they started making automatics..lets put it this way, the 70's is when the Beetle started to die off, and there is a reason for that. Not to mention, 69's and older look better.

Also - The superbug does have a few problems that don't show up in the standard bug too - the strut towers attach to the body, not the floor pan (so you can't roll a floor pan around without a body on it). It really means that with harsh treatment, the tower tops (the body) can lean in towards each other and cause suspension alignment problems. There is a fix of course - a strut placed between the towers to hold them apart. Supers also have more problems with the front end - the "super shimmies" is a common problem.
They drive very nicely if everything is tight and lined up properly, but they can not take the punishment of the standard bug.
Standard for the winnn, mostly, purists just don't like how much they changed when going to the Super.

The old VW do look better. But to me a 73 Beetle still has a lot more soul than my 2001 Civic, and that's really what I want a car with more soul. Plus the Super Beelte is an improved car. It's like comparing a 69 911 to an 82 911, they both have advantages over each other, and honestly which one is "better" is j a matter of opinion.

As said in my last coment, it's not really improve, they made it a bit worse really..buuttt, they did give it more front bonnet storage space, lol. That's a small improvement, haha. And does indeed have more soul, it's better then no Beetle at all :P but I'd look for a split or oval window personally..if I didn't already have my 65'.

I almost have a 59' Vert for my first car, ended up having to sell it though..then got the 65' a few years later and it was my first car..and still have it now 6-7 years later :)

I did not know that. I guess the first thing I'd do it put on a strut tower brace then. Then make it louder. cuz you know... why not.

For a while mine was able to set off car alarms prettty easy..tuned down a bit now, I really should get dual carbs again, lol. I have a phat boy exhaust on mine (and saggy rear suspension, so it drags on everything, haha) I can bolt a stinger straight onto the headers if I want though :D

I have been dailying mine for a while, all winter (because a Z on summer tires can't really do snow) and..so far all summer, because my Z has a flat, and I'm waiting for new wheels and tires to come in.

Awesome, every one keeps warning me that the heater sucks, but a Beetle in winter one good tires sounds like a bucket of fun. I drove a 91 Civic through two Wisconsin winters, a Beetles heater can't be that much worse.

"stinger straight onto the headers" Yes that.

Yes. My heater might as well not exist below 35 degrees. It works fine above 40 though, lol. It does great in snow, just be careful of oversteer..when the rear slides out, well..your engine (and thus all the cars weight) is in the rear, so if it slides out, it tends to be like "follow me!!!" and the rest of the car will listen if you aren't careful, lol. But yeah, the heater might as well not exist below 38, after 15 minutes of driving it'd start to clear a 2x3 inch space to see through in my windshield when it was freezing out.

SOUNDS LIKE FUN! and not much worse than my old Civic.. when the blower motor went out. You can alway put in an auxilary 12v hearter.

I have a 74 regular bug and a 72 Baja and they're a lot of fun to drive/fix/look at. Live the dream! Also, obligatory one of us...one of us....one of us... chant.

Alrighty. Thankfully it has been just a summer diver for the last few years so it's in better shape then most.
